Roman gets arrested, my son loses his first, life via Twitter, Indiana Jones reincarnated? and thank goodness for Jewish Holidays.

The big story to hit last week was the arrest of Roman Polanski in Zurich after 32 years on the run for molestation charges. I might talk about my son too much, but if I do, let me know. This last week he lost his first baby tooth and the results weren’t quite what I expected. Even though it’s 4-weeks away we went out and picked up a Halloween costume so we could beat the rush at the stores. Here’s another adventure I had with my son at the miniature golf course. Thank goodness he was too young to understand what I was talking about. People keep talking about Twitter ever since Oprah joined the bandwagon. I found this video online of what life would be like if you could only talk in 140 characters or less. Speaking of videos I had a conversation of the de-evolution of the music video and the Primus video Mr. Krinkle was mentioned. While on the topic of work, I saw a guy last week using The Club on his car to protect it from being stolen. I’m wondering what decade we’re living in! People still use that stuff and think that their car will still be safe? Last Monday was Yom Kippur and it was a slow day at work. Amazing how much a Jewish holiday affected our work flow, amongst other things. Also, you won’t believe what I saw at McDonald’s. Let’s just say it’s a fashion statement I’ve never seen before! And lastly, I complain about people who think that their pets are kids!

Yesterday, my son, CJ, had his football banquet.

It was a nice event. They had it set up banquet style with pizza and baked ziti and tons of snacks and deserts. If you went away hungry it was your own fault.

Of course, that main event of the day was the handing out of the awards to everyone. All the coaches, players and cheerleaders were given something for the work they did this season. When CJ got his award he looked all around to find me and ran over. The first words out of his mouth were, “Daddy, are you proud of me?” Naturally, I told him yes. He said is it because I was given the trophy. I went on to explain to him that he wasn’t given the trophy he earned it by going to the practices and playing as hard as he could during the games.

(Sidenote: Now, if you are wondering why we are put on this planet, it’s because of moments like this. The feeling I got when he came over to find me to show me his trophy was something that can’t be explained.)

To top off the event the coach had brought a pinata for the kids. (It’s not like the kids had enough sugar in their bloodstreams already.) The coach had given up on having the kids actually try to hit the pinata. Instead, he punched a hole in it and dumped it on the floor and let them go crazy.

After ingesting a few sugar snacks and running around hitting other kids with a balloon it was time to go home. It was truly a wonderful day. I am so proud of him!

Out of nowhere, on Monday, my 5-year old son, CJ, asked me if he could buy a school lunch that day. For that first six weeks of kindergarten he has been taking his lunch to school without any hassle. But, on this day he wanted to buy a lunch. He’s never wanted it before so I told him that we’ll look at the menu and figure out what day you like that lunch and I’ll let you buy it. He agreed and corn dogs interested him. Of course, this lunch was the NEXT DAY. I honestly think that he picked the first thing he heard just so he could buy a school lunch.

When he got home Tuesday night, I asked how his lunch went. His eyes lit up. He said that it was great. He got to take a tray and pick one of the two main dishes and got to get three things: meal, milk, desert. He took the corn dog, chocolate milk, and jello. He told me he got to slide the tray down a line just like CiCi’s (a pizza buffet restaurant). It was funny how he compared his school lunch with a buffet restaurant.

It’s amazing how his eyes light up and his hands start flailing explaining about his lunch experience. I love how such a simple experience as buying a lunch to an adult is a truly amazing experience for a little child.

But, as you can guess, he wanted to buy lunch the next day at school.

Being a beautiful Sunday, I planned on taking my son, CJ out to pick pumpkins in a pumkin patch. He has never actually picked pumpkins, except for the ones you can ‘pick’ in the grocery store. This was also my first experience. There is a nice place not to far from the house that seemed to be the perfect place. Of course, being only three weeks away from Halloween the place was packed. The place was amazing they offered everything from ‘pre-picked’ pumpkins, apple picking, a petting zoo to a hayride. We paid the $1 per person for the hayride to take us to the pumpkin patch. The place was interesting. I’ve never been in a pumpkin patch before, but CJ was excited about it.

Every pumpkin he saw in there he wanted to pick – even the green ones! Of course, I explained to him that you need to look for one that’s orange and predominately round with no big cuts or gouges in it. After about 15 minutes he found one that seemed to weigh about the same as he does. He was happy.

I didn’t want to be lugging that heavy orb around the place so I decided to go and pay for it. Of course, since the parking lot was full that also meant that the lines were also long. It took me 20 minutes just to get to the register to pay for this beast. That’s longer than it took CJ to pick it out! The place we went to charges for pumpkins by the pound and I don’t know how much that was, but the grand total for this one pumpkin was $12.84! I can’t believe that they charge that much for a pumpkin! This is a place that has them in the field. I went out to the patch (which I paid a $1 to get there), I picked the pumpkin (they didn’t), and I walked it to the register, stood in line for a third of an hour and they charge me that much!

The moral of this story is: If you want the experience of picking your pumpkins go to a pumpkin patch, look around, and take all the pictures you want. But, in the end, you’ll end up at Wal-Mart paying a lot less for the exact same thing!

(Final note: My son doesn’t know why I want to “cut up” the pumpkin. He knows what a jack-o-latern is.)
