As we were heading to our pumpkin adventure, my mother-in-law, Pat, decided to try to get to the “strange building on the hill side”. (A story for another day.) We couldn’t get to it, but on our way back towards town and the park we wanted to go to, we drove by this sign:

Neither Pat nor I even knew that this place existed a mere 10 minutes from the house. Of course, we did a U-turn and headed there. It is an amazing place. When you walk up to it you can feel the somberness of the place.

The three items sticking up are parts of the base of the towers. As you approach there are a couple of plaques explaining the design of the memorial and what each part of it represents. Also at the site there are parts of Flight 93 and soil from the Pentagon building.

Encircling the entire memorial are plaques with the names and cities in Morris county of those that perished on this terrible.

64 people’s lives where lost that day from this one part of the country. Also people have brought things to remember their loved ones: flags, books, firefighter gloves, photos, and there was even a doll placed there. I don’t even want to think about the doll. It’s bad enough that adults died, but to think that children’s lives were lost make it even more heartbreaking.

If you are ever in the area you need to check it out, or, if you live somewhere where there is a local memorial you need to go and check it out. This is one of those days in history that we will never forget.

I’ve uploaded some other pictures to my Flickr account here, so go and take a look.
