A memory of Christmas Past

When I was in grade school (maybe 4th or 3rd, not too sure).  I remember being on the bus heading towards the school and it was a week or so after Thanksgiving and our artificial 6 foot tree was put up and decorated.  Sitting on the bus was one of my neighbors/classmates Eric.  As we left his stop and he sat next to me I told him that we put up our tree for Christmas already.  Then, I turned to him and asked him if he did the same.  He told me that they don’t put a tree up and that they’re Jewish.  I had no clue what the heck he was talking about.  I just replied, “uh” and proceeded to look out the window until we made it to school.

I don’t know when I realized that the Jews celebrate a different holiday, but when you’re that age you don’t understand why not everyone celebrates Christmas.  You figure “If I do it then everyone else must too.”
